The impact of lighting and makeup on the quality of stage plays in Uganda: a case study of selected plays in the Uganda National Theatre and Bat Valley Theatre

Abstract

This study sought to examine the impact of makeup and lighting on the quality of stage plays in Uganda with focus on the Uganda National Theatre and Bat Valley theatres in Uganda, Kampala district. In this research I used the qualitative case study research design coupled with interviews, direct observation and document analysis to collect the necessary data. The findings indicate that good quality makeup and lighting enable actors to assume their characters, which results in the audience’s ability to see the character in the play but not the actor. These furthermore create good spectacle for the audience which enables them to enjoy the plays hence keeping them coming to the theatres. It is hoped that the findings of the study will deepen the understanding and appreciation of good quality lighting and makeup while offering fresh and practical insights which can improve theatrical productions in Uganda.
