Issues on construction waste: The need for sustainable waste management system for high rise commercial buildings in Kampala

Abstract

The research covers a range of strategies such as facilitating the development alternatives to disposal, appropriate waste management and the management of regulation needed to effectively to reduce the amount of waste on the construction site and to maximize recovery for effective economic development. The study looks at how management construction industry is implementing on site construction waste management system within their onsite waste management plans and to see whether if it‟s being developed as part an integrated waste management system. Based on quantitative and qualitative research methods of onsite waste management plans and of personal communication, the research investigates why the development of an onsite construction waste management system has been hindered though there have been perceived as the extra risks that the system poses. Furthermore, the reluctance of construction industry to develop an integrated onsite construction wastes management system and the long-term feasibility, and sustainability of waste management system. Efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle construction waste may save money, reduce liability, keep job sites cleaner and safer, and conserve valuable landfill space.
