| dc.description.abstract | Boda-boda motorcycles have become a ubiquitous mode of transportation in Kampala, Uganda, offering affordability, accessibility, and flexibility. However, the rapid expansion of this sector has been accompanied by a surge in road traffic accidents, resulting in significant human and economic costs. This study aimed to identify key factors contributing to these accidents, focusing on demographic, weather related, rider behaviors, and social factors. The study employed a simple random sampling, data were collected from 384 boda-boda riders in Kampala. Analyses revealed that demographic characteristics, specifically age and education, significantly influenced accident risk. Younger, less educated riders were more likely to be involved in accidents. Weather conditions, particularly rainfall, exacerbated accident rates. Furthermore, riding behaviors were found to be associated with increased accident risk. Using mobile phones while riding was identified as key factor. The multivariate analysis confirmed the significant impact of age, education, rainfall, and riding behaviors on accident occurrence. However, the model also revealed that factors such as motorcycle ownership influenced accident risk. In conclusion, the research underscore the complex interplay of factors contributing to boda-boda accidents. To mitigate these risks, a multifaceted approach is necessary, including targeted interventions for vulnerable rider groups, improved road infrastructure, and strict enforcement of traffic regulations. By addressing these factors, policymakers and stakeholders can implement effective strategies to reduce accidents, protect lives, and enhance the overall safety of the boda-boda transport system in Kampala. | en_US |
