The effects of the 15% tuition increment among the privately sponsored students in Makerere University

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out factors influencing students' adoption of 15% tuition policy at Makerere University at school of statistics and planning. Specifically, age, gender, course of study, nationality as factors that influence 15% tuition policy adoption were investigated. Primary data involving both qualitative and quantitative data were collected using a 15-item questionnaire from 120 students who had enrolled in various courses at SSP and analysis was done using frequency distribution tables, cross tabulation, Pearson chi square test for independence and logistic regression. From the results, over half of the students (51.6%) were males and (48.3%) were females. Findings from the bivariate analysis showed that nationality, course of study and awareness of the policy were all associated with adoption of 15% tuition policy (p<0.05). From the ordinary logistic regression it showed that awareness of the policy was a significant factor at 5% level. Also course of study showed significance (p<0.05) with BSBS having (0.01) It was concluded that the factors that positively influence students' adoption of 15% tuition policy included: nationality of the student, sex, awareness of the policy and course of study. Therefore, there is a need for subsidization of 15% tuition policy by the government to enable students to attain quality education at Makerere University.
