Abstract
This dissertation explores how Afrobeats has influenced the production of Ugandan popular music. By tracing its history and evolution, the study examines ways Afrobeats has shaped the sound, style, and identity of some of Ugandan popular music today. Specifically, it explores how Uganda popular musicians have localized the Afrobeats elements to fit within the Ugandan music culture. Data were gathered through interviews with producers, songwriters, and performers of Afrobeats music in Uganda as well as media review of Afrobeats music. Study findings show that Afrobeats has greatly influenced Ugandan popular music by blending local rhythms with global sounds, creating both opportunities and challenges for artists. Its popularity in Uganda has led to expanded fanbase, increased bookings, creativity, relatability, and uniqueness. Despite some noted challenges such as plagiarism, Afrobeats bears potential for shaping the future of Ugandan music, but its success depends on deliberate efforts to localize it. Results are discussed in terms of how Ugandan artists can improve quality production, uniqueness and collaboration so as to compete globally and remain locally and regionally relevant.
