Analysis of road traffic injuries reported in Uganda (2011-2022)

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to examine the impact of driver-related factors i.e.; careless driving and reckless driving on road traffic injuries and to assess the impact of vehicle-related factors i.e.; DMC and overloading on road traffic injuries from year 2011 to 2022. This research employed secondary data obtained from different annual crime reports issued out every year by UPF considering variables such as total injuries, number of vehicles involved, the various causes such as careless driving, reckless driving, DMC, overloading, driving under influence of alcohol, over speeding, careless pedestrians. OLS method was used to examine the relationships between careless driving, reckless driving, DMC and overloading on road traffic injuries in Uganda from the year 2011 to 2022. The study concluded that careless driving, reckless driving, DMC and overloading significantly impact on road traffic injuries in Uganda. It finally recommended that increased sensitization, empowering implementation and enforcement of traffic laws, regular patrols and installation of long-distance cameras should be done to minimize RTIs in Uganda.
