The use and management of recreational open spaces in Hoima Municipality

Abstract

Recreational open spaces play an important role in contributing to the quality of urban life and environment. The main objective of this study is to contribute knowledge to the use and management of recreational open spaces in Hoima municipality. In order to meet the study’s aims, a combination of methods was applied, including a study of literature, interviews with recreational open space managers, and a survey among residents of Hoima municipality. Findings from the study of use of the recreational open spaces showed that distance to recreational open spaces from the residence is an important factor that explains the frequency of recreational open space use. The results of the study also indicate that recreational open spaces are receiving attention in Hoima municipality. Therefore, this research asserts that there is need to improve and establish open spaces and recreational centers in Hoima Municipality since, they have a marked effect on many aspects of the quality of the urban environment and the richness of life in a city. This study recommends that recreational open spaces should be made an integral component of the environment by the design of well landscaped and managed recreational areas. This will eventually contribute to the quality of life and well- being.
