Abstract
Construction waste management is a critical aspect of sustainable development, and the
successful adoption of the 3R concept—Reduce, Reuse, recycle—is paramount in mitigating
environmental impact. This research explored the pivotal role contractors play in the successful
implementation of the 3R concept in construction waste management. The study sought to
understand the factors that contribute to contractors' willingness or resistance to embracing the
3R concept. This is because it is crucial for tailoring interventions and strategies that align with
their needs
Through a mixed-methods approach, including surveys and thematic analyses of open-ended
responses, data was collected from 55 contractors operating in Kampala, Uganda. The findings
revealed a variety of perceptions, barriers, and perceived benefits associated with 3R adoption.
While many contractors expressed enthusiasm and willingness to embrace sustainable
practices, barriers such as limited awareness, cost implications, and regulatory constraints
hindered adoption efforts. Nevertheless, contractors recognized several benefits, including cost
savings, environmental sustainability, and improved project management, associated with 3R
implementation.
The study concludes with recommendations for overcoming barriers and fostering successful
adoption, including investing in education and awareness initiatives, improving recycling
infrastructure, and integrating 3R principles into project management practices.
