| dc.description.abstract | The study entitled the effect of technology on the evolution of sports betting among the students of Makerere University. Sports betting refers to the staking of money on an event having an uncertain outcome in the hope of winning additional money while technology refers to the use of scientific knowledge and innovations to create tools, devices and systems to improve and simplify different aspects of life. In this case technology mainly the internet and online betting application have been researched. Currently technology has advanced and majority of the youth are involved in sports betting. Technology has therefore played a role in impacting the way individuals carry out betting. The integration of technology in sports betting has also brought about social and cultural implications in Uganda, with the advent of online platforms and mobile applications, sports betting has become more accessible and convenient for Ugandan bettors. A case study of school of statistics and planning. The study had the following objectives, to determine the relationship between technology and sports betting, to determine the effect of technology on the correctness bets, to determine the effect of technology on the number of bets placed by the sports bettors, to determine if technology through online betting has caused addiction to sports betting. A •total 100 students were interviewed through issuing questionnaires. The data collected was analyzed using STATA, univariate analysis was carried out on the independent variables and frequencies were generated, bivariate analysis was done on both the dependent and independent variables to assess the association between the two variables. Pearson Chi square test statistic was used in the analysis and associations with P — Value less than 0.05 were considered for further analysis, multivariate analysis was performed to assess the overall significance of the variables that were significant with the dependent variable at bivariate level and multinomial logistic regression was carried out as well, odds ratios and associated P — Values were reported. It was discovered that technology through online betting has an effect on the correctness of bets, technology increases the frequency of betting often and occasionally, and online betting has caused addiction among the sports bettors. Promoting Responsible Gambling and regulatory measures were some of the recommendations. | en_US |
