The role of Galaxy FM in the promotion of upcoming musicians in Kampala

Abstract

This study addressed the role of Galaxy FM in the promotion of upcoming musicians in Kampala. This study was focused to find out the benefits upcoming musicians get from promoting with radio, criteria used by Galaxy to promote musicians. It furthermore investigated the challenges incurred by both Galaxy and upcoming musicians during the promotion of the music. Most upcoming musicians in Kampala had started to write off the radio stations as one of the major ways of promoting their music and had resorted to social media platforms. But later, they realized that even if one is trending on the digital platforms, he/she must also be on the radios. Because radios could help them reach their target audience faster. So, this motivated me to carry out this study, and it was conducted in parts of Kampala (Ggaba, wandegeya, jinjakalori). I also oughted to use the Qualitative method of data collection and used tools such as; interviews, observation, and others. And here I managed to interview three upcoming musicians and five Galaxy FM Djs. Furthermore, with the use of the internet I also managed to gather some information that I used for my literature review and get data about my study from related studies already in existence. The study proved that upcoming musicians in Kampala benefit a lot when they promote their music through radio. The musicians get chance to share stages with already proven Artists; they also get opportunities to sing on the radio‘s events and are paid. The findings furthermore showed that musicians also get chance for their music to reach wider audiences than they imagined hence increasing their chances of succeeding in the industry. In conclusion, I realized that Galaxy FM plays a vital role in the promotion of upcoming musicians even though the digital media is also active. And Galaxy FM has really played a significant role in the music industry of Uganda.
