Abstract
The study examines the impact of integrating Kiganda traditional musical instruments into Roman Catholic liturgy. It focuses on selected senior secondary schools within Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese. The research examines whether incorporating them into Catholic liturgical practice can enhance spiritual engagement, strengthen cultural identity, and promote meaningful participation among students. In this study, a qualitative approach utilizing observation, documentary analysis, photography, literature review, and attendance to performances featuring Kiganda instruments was used. This was to examine their role in Catholic liturgy within secondary schools in the Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese. The research revealed a major gap in literature and documentation on Kiganda traditional instruments, raising a need for deeper study and emphasizing the value for these instruments. The study noted that without intentional liturgical incorporation, these instruments risk cultural misappropriation. The dissertation documents and analyzes the Kiganda musical instruments, their functions and role in Catholic liturgy. It goes on to shows how they shape students’ cultural and social development within the spirit of in culturation. The research analyses the Key challenges like high costs, scarce raw materials, declining craftsmanship, few trained instructors, limited curriculum time, and the dominance of Western instruments. The study recommends cost reduction through shared funding, sustainable production through artisan training and workshops, increased instructional time, and the promotion of music clubs and competitions. Finally, it emphasizes documentation and digitization for a sure preservation of the indigenous musical knowledge for both Church and social benefit.
