| dc.description.abstract | This study explored the cultural heritage of the Lango people in Uganda and examined its potential for tourism development. The study was guided by the following objectives; to profile elements of the Lango cultural heritage that have the potential to be developed for tourism, to examine strategies put in place to exploit cultural heritage resource in Lango for tourism development, to establish challenges of developing Lango cultural heritage for tourism development. Data was collected using the following methods that included self-administered questionnaire and document review. The collected data was analyzed using thematic analysis and descriptive analytical methods. The study findings revealed that key elements of the Lango cultural heritage that appeal to tourists included traditional music and dance, Lango culinary traditions, the Lango cultural heritage center, cultural artifacts like Otega and Tua, customs and traditions, and rituals such as the crowning of the King. Strategies to exploit these cultural heritage resources for tourism development comprised of marketing and promotion, community involvement, conservation and restoration efforts, collaboration with the private sector, tourism infrastructure enhancement, and capacity building. Different challenges were identified in developing Lango cultural heritage for tourism. These included community disunity, deteriorating heritage sites, poor infrastructure, inadequate funding, and a lack of local awareness about the cultural tourism potential. Based on the identified challenges, the study recommended for the empowering and involving of the local community in tourism initiatives, building capacity and skills among cultural practitioners, implementing sustainable conservation practices, enhancing promotion and marketing strategies, addressing infrastructural challenges, securing funding and financial support, and fostering partnerships and collaborations with key stakeholders. By implementing these recommendations, the Lango sub-region can unlock the full potential of its cultural heritage, creating a sustainable tourism ecosystem that benefits local communities and visitors alike. | en_US |
