Assessment of religious tourism potential of Kigungu Missionary Landing Site in Wakiso District.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the potential of tourism on the local community around Kigungu Missionary Landing Site in Wakiso District. The study was based on three objectives; to examine the infrastructure and religious tourism activities carried out at Kigungu missionary landing site, to assess how the tourism activities have influenced communities around Kigungu Missionary Landing Site and to examine the challenges facing tourism in communities. A cross-sectional survey design that applied a quantitative approach to the study was adopted to capture views, attitude and opinions of various respondents. Questionnaires were used to source quantitative information. The population of the study was 32 residents of Kigungu Missionary Landing site. The sample size was selected and was determined by applying Krejcie and Morgan (1970). Simple random sampling method was used for selection of respondents and data was analyzed using SPSS. Results were presented using frequencies and percentages. This study implements a formal revenue collection system at the site, such as a ticketing system for entry or voluntary donations. This could help sustain site operations, support maintenance, and contribute to the development of tourism infrastructure. Improve transportation links to Kigungu, including paved roads and public transport options, to ensure better access for tourists, particularly those from outside the region.
