| dc.description.abstract | This research proposal, titled ”The Impacts of Mining Activities on Land Use Patterns in Tiira Town Council - Busia District,” explores how mining activities have reshaped land use patterns in Tiira Town Council, Uganda. Authored by Peace Akoth, the study examines the environmental, economic, and social impacts of mining while offering recommendations for sustainable practices and regulatory reforms. It aims to address key issues such as land degradation, water pollution, and conflicts over land use in a rapidly growing mining region. Mining activities in Tiira have caused significant environmental degradation, including deforesta- tion, soil erosion, and contamination of water sources with chemicals such as mercury. These environmental changes have not only reduced agricultural productivity but have also led to habi- tat destruction and increased greenhouse gas emissions. The displacement of communities and unplanned urbanization near mining areas have further exacerbated socio-economic challenges, with many residents facing loss of livelihoods, unemployment, and poor living conditions. The study also highlights regulatory challenges in managing mining impacts. Despite the existence of frameworks like the Mining and Minerals Act (2022) and the National Environment Act (2019), weak enforcement and corruption have undermined efforts to mitigate environmental damage and ensure equitable distribution of mining benefits. Informal and artisanal mining, which remains largely unregulated, contributes significantly to land degradation and social tensions in the re- gion. To address these issues, the study proposes best practices and innovative approaches, such as integrating renewable energy into mining operations, implementing advanced land reclamation techniques, and promoting afforestation efforts. It emphasizes the importance of community in- volvement in land use decision-making and suggests leveraging tools like Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for effective planning and monitoring. The proposal also advocates for fair com- pensation and proper resettlement of displaced communities to reduce conflicts and promote sus- tainable development. By mapping existing land use patterns, assessing the impacts of mining, and evaluating the effec- tiveness of regulatory frameworks, this research provides actionable insights for policymakers, local authorities, and stakeholders. Its findings underscore the need for a balanced approach that en- sures economic growth while safeguarding environmental and social well-being in mining-affected areas. | en_US |
