Abstract
An increasing number of Jua-kali fabrication spaces has been observed in most parts of Kampala city. This is attributed to alarming levels of unemployment in the country and the inability of the formal industrial sector to absorb the current supply of labor. Therefore, the Jua kali fabrication sector is being seen as the alternative to wrestle the alarming levels of unemployment by establishing themselves in self-employment schemes. Considering that less capital, less skill and less space is required to startup this kind of the business, this has fostered reasonable numbers of Jua-kali fabrication workshops to emerge from all parts of Kampala city. From preliminary observation, it has become apparent that residential neighborhoods close to Jua-kali industries are being impacted with a number of health and safety hazards. Informal birth of metal fabrication workshops has been a way of people establishing themselves in self-employment. As a result, establishments of this sort have impacted on health and safety of both the artisans and nearby inhabitants. This research therefore sought to assess the Health and Safety Impacts of Jua-Kali Metal Fabrication Industries on the Neighboring Residential Environments.
