Abstract
Since throughout history, man kind has been using different pigments, paints and media to paint
on rocks, walls, paper, easel and more so as to communicate something. Overtime, the concept of
painting evolved from just a means of expressing themselves, to a commercial venture and career
where painters inspire other artists to create captivating and memorable art so as to connect and
impress the world.
Painting has provided a reliable source of income for multiple artists world wide and locally. The
purpose of this research is to help other researchers and architects design an environment that
will help in the painting practice of different artists. Since it has been established that painting
contributes to the economic lifestyles of different individuals and also promotes cultural and
tourism sectors, this research paper poses the question as to whether Makerere University
Industrial and Fine Arts school, the oldest art school in Uganda and sub Saharan Africa, is well
equipped to help young artists develop and improve their craft in its design and resources.
The research paper will talk about the painting process for realism paintings, as this is what it is
focused on. It will go on to catch similar activities from the different artists, so as to know what
activities to plan for. It will then go on to mention the requirements from different authors and
artists as well as architects for executing these activities well enough. These requirements will be
architectural requirements such as lighting, ventilation, anthropometrics and more.
The paper will then investigate the contents of the school and how they measure up to the
parameters set earlier. This will help us know how equipped the school is as well as what is
missing and what can be improved, added or removed. The paper will continue to discuss the
findings on the site and the research material recorded earlier on. This is when we shall get to
know what needs to be done moving forward, including mentioning recommendations and so on.
