Assessing the impact of skills transfer on the performance of local construction personnel attached to international contractors.

Abstract

This chapter discusses the research background, statement of the problem, the main objectives of the research, the specific objectives, scope and significance of the study Background Construction industry plays a vital role in the economic growth of a country. It helps in improving the quality of life of its citizens by providing the necessary socio-economic infrastructure such as roads, hospitals, schools and other basic & enhanced facilities. Besides these the construction industry is a main contributor to a country‟s economy. (Jamilus Md Hussin*, 2013). In today‟s global economic conditions, improving productivity of the construction industry is becoming more pressing than ever. In most countries, the cost of operatives comprises 30–50% of the overall project‟s cost. (McTague, 2008),and thus, it is regarded as a true reflection of the efficiency of the operation. In addition, since construction is a labor-intensive industry, it can be argued that labor may be the only productive resource, and therefore construction productivity is mainly dependent upon human effort and performance (Abdulaziz M. Jarkas & and Milan Radosavljevic, 2013). Uganda has got many Local Construction Contractors engaged in the construction business. Some of these change business name and scope within a short time because of the competitiveness pressures within the construction industry. Little is achieved by these struggling local construction contractors due to the level of development of the local construction industry.
