A Project Report Submitted in Partial Fulfillment as A Requirement for the Award of the Degree of Bachelor of Science with Education of Makerere University.en_US
Bicycles are some of the most ubiquitous forms of transportation in the world and Uganda in particular with about 83.56 percent of the population in rural areas. Though there are many people riding bicycles, the mechanical energy generated is not utilized and therefore wasted. Wasted energy is troubling in the world and now that energy is deeply integrated into people's everyday lives, one of the most energy consumers being small electrical devices such as mobile phones. With the increasing demand for technology, many people now possess mobile phones for various commercial, study and social purposes and the phones require regular charging for use yet the access to electricity at sometimes maybe hard especially in remote areas , hilly regions , islands where generation of power is scanty if not nil. This report entails the design and fabrication of a dynamo powered charger that's of great help to charge mobile phone because even if there is no sun for solar generation, no water for hydro generation, one can still charge. In addition to the design, this thesis involves measuring the output of the dynamo. The dynamo attached on the back wheel produces electricity due to a motor that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. The AC produced by the dynamo is converted to DC by a system consisting of diodes, capacitor, voltage regulator and USB port. This about 5V DC is then used for charging the phone. However, a constant output voltage of 4.89V was obtained in this project and it was able to charge the phone.en_US
