A Dissertation submitted to the department in partial fulfilment of the award for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts with Education of Makerere University.en_US
This dissertation is motivated by the researcher’s need to explore how different media fraternities (i.e., media houses & social media platforms) have enhanced the development of Kiswahili language in Uganda. Kiswahili is used as a lingua franca by the people of East Africa. To strengthen its development in Uganda, Kiswahili has been introduced in schools. Nonetheless, it is observed that technological advancements in the media channels (e.g., radio & television stations) as well as in the social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, WhatsApp & Twitter) have provided complementary roles towards language development at the global scale. Thus, in this dissertation, I trace the contributions of these media fraternities towards the development of Kiswahili in Uganda since 1986.Keywords: Kiswahili, Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Uganda, Television and radio.en_US
