An investigation into the adequacy of Kampala remand prison-Luzira towards rehabilitation of Prisoners
Abstract
Over time, the notion of imprisonment has globally changed from punishment to rehabilitation, several programs have been designed to rehabilitate and reinsert prisoners into society. These programs need to be run from environments that will foster their realization. Environments with good architectural qualities can influence and alter the mindset and behavior of detainees, however the idea of incorporating architecture as a rehabilitating tool has largely been undermined or rather un discovered by prison management. This research looks at the rehabilitation programs, facilities and the psychology of Architecture involved in rehabilitation and reinsertion of detainees into society as better citizens. Increased awareness of detainees’ responsiveness to Architecture as a remedy to criminal thoughts will create a crime free society.
