Building an Fm radio receiver that uses a capacitor as a back up component.
Abstract
Sending and receiving information (communication) is one of the under- mined venture, but vital in daily life. Among the various means of communication, radio is the most common and the cheapest one, that penetrates even remote premises with limited interferences. In radio broadcasting, we have amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM). However, for this study, the concentration and emphasis are incident on FM, by analysing a FM radio receiver. Designing a FM radio receiver circuit, identifying, then incorporating the backup capacitor within the circuit and then to test for their workability were the cores of the study. A 16V/1mF capacitor is used as a backup for the power source. As the power source is supplied to the circuit, the receiver starts to operate and as well the capacitor also charges. But in case the source can no longer sustain the operation of the circuit at any point, due to uctuation in the input voltage, the capacitor takes over by supplying its voltage to bridge up the gap in the voltage irregularities as a way of a discharging process. When the source gains, the capacitor then withdraw the support and then
reverses to charging process so as to store voltage which it in return supplies to the circuit at a point when uctuation resurfaces.
Graphs that illustrate the charging and discharging process of the backup capacitor are also indicated.Di erent electronics components that were used in the study were analysed, this was done by studying their electrical behaviours like, resistance,
capacitance, capacitive reactance and inductance of a resistor, capacitor and inductor respectively e.t.c, rationally connected and then a circuit diagram which shows the connection process as a preferred methodology was came up with. This aided the fabrication stage where the components were xed on the permanent circuit board (PC board). Soldering of the components on PC Board was done, while using a heating mantle. At the end of the study, results that illustrate the working mode of the now a FM radio receiver, recommendations like one has to use a signal generator, unless otherwise a specied radio receiver etc, and the conclusions were made and discussed about by the author and the supervisor.
