A Dissertation Submitted to the School of Statistics and Planning in Partial Fulfilment for the Award of the Degree of Bachelor of Statistics of Makerere Universityen_US
The main purpose of this research was to investigate effects of place of residence at school of statistics and planning of 98 respondents were selected and included in the sample and research face to face interviews were conducted with students with a guide of well-designed predetermined questions. The collected data was analyzed using STATA and inference was made from this analysis. Univariate, bivariate and multivariate levels of analysis were done. A descriptive summary was made for each of the variables at the univariate level and a chi square test was run between the independent variables and academic performance at 5% level of significance at the bi-variate level of analysis while at the multivariate level, a Multivariate regression model was run with academic performance as the dependent variable and the rest of the variables as independent variables at 5% level of significance. This analysis revealed academic performance is significantly and positively influenced by female gender among students and Wandegeya residence among students in hostel/rentals while the private sponsorship and residence in mixed sex hostels significantly influenced academic performance to the negative direction. Thus, it is worth concluding that academic performance among students highly depends on the private sponsorship, mixed sex hostels, Wandegeya residence and female gender of students. The study assessed the influence of student’s place of residence on academic performance. Further research should be done on how the places of residence can be re-designed and more studies should be done on the factors that affect academic performance of undergraduate students.en_US
