A research project report submitted to the Department of Chemistry in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of the Degree of Bachelor of Science (physical) at Makerere University.en_US
This project was aimed at synthesizing and characterizing new and stable complexes that include bimetallic mixed-ligand complexes [Co(en)2][Co(SCN)4], [Zn(en)2][Co(SCN)4] and [Zn(An)6]3[Fe(SCN)6]2. The synthesized compounds are important in the chemical and biological industry. All the complexes were obtained almost immediately after mixing of the component metal complex solution. [Zn(An)6]3[Fe(SCN)6]2 appeared as a white fine powder, [Zn(en)2][Co(SCN)4] formed as green crystals. The synthesized trinitrotriammine cobalt (III) Compound formed the two possible products as stated in literature (yellow needles and yellow-brown compound) (MacDermott, 1968). The UV-visible spectra of aqueous solutions of bimetallic complexes show a maximum absorbance at a wavelength of 980nm due to the d→d transition of metal ion. The visible spectra of aqueous solutions of the polyoxometalates show a maximum absorbance at a wavelength of 400nm due to the f→f transitions. An aqueous solution of trinitrotriammine cobalt (III) shows a maximum absorbance at a wavelength of 350nm due to the eg← t2g transitions.en_US
