| dc.description.abstract | The main aim of this study was to analyse the placement of street furniture in Kampala central business district. And my specifications were mainly on Bombo road, Jinja road and Kampala road. 50 members participated in the study using questionnaires.
During the study various methods and techniques of data collection and analysis were applied and these included reviews of relevant literature relating to types, placement, challenges and problems, implications and possible solutions of street furniture. Methods like Observations, interviewing, questionnaire method of data collection and incidental sampling were also used in this study.
The study found out that most people had knowledge about street furniture but most of them knew about benches, lighting and garbage bins. Most of the respondents could identify the use of various street furniture. Other furniture included shelter, bollards, advertising boards, guard railings, public art and fountains. These can all be observed along the area of study.
The research also found out that there are some challenges and problems related to street furniture and this was especially on the pedestrians. Most furniture especially garbage bins were distracting pedestrian movement causing them to walk in the road. There was also congestion in use of street furniture especially the shelters which has increased the level of theft and spread of contagious diseases.
There were also several implications brought about by the placement of street furniture which included the importance of street furniture and how poor design of street furniture has continued to pose a risk of accidents to the pedestrians.
While it is subjective, challenges related to street furniture can be effectively reduced and managed by increasing on the numbers of the various street furniture in relation to the population, doing more of cleaning and locating street furniture in its rightful places. Zoning and partitioning of roads and many more leading to a better efficiency of using streets not only on a functional level, but also on a more human level. | en_US |
