dc.description.abstract | With reference to wet cooling towers, drift refers to small droplets of circulating water carried out of the cooling tower by saturated exhaust air. The inertia impaction separators called drift eliminators are used for stripping water droplets from exhaust air. Drift eliminators are equipment commonly used to minimize water loss from a cooling tower, from the research, it is observed that the characteristic of the installed drift eliminators, like their pressure drop affects the thermal performance of a given cooling tower. In this research a few drift eliminators have been characterized in terms of pressure drop and collection efficiency to provide reliable information to be used in drift eliminator selection and design. Generally for the same type of drift eliminators the higher the pressure the more efficient it is. Concerning different types, wire mesh drift eliminators performs better than the rest in terms of both pressure drop and collection efficiency. This research studies thermal performance of a cooling tower with different drift eliminators for a wide range of mass water flow rates. The effect of drift eliminator discharge angle was investigated and optimal discharge angle determined. The results show that both the particle collection efficiency and the pressure loss increases as the eliminator geometry become more complex with the discharge angle and as the flow rate through the eliminator increases. | en_US |
