dc.description.abstractThis research project investigated the potential of watermelon seeds as natural coagulant for water treatment when used as a potential partial replacement for aluminium Sulphate in water treatment in Luweero Industries limited. The jar test experiments were performed on water obtained from Lake Kyoga to determine the effect of dosage of water melon seed coagulant on coagulation speed. The results showed that a dosage of 0.1g/L, pH of 7.0, stirring time of about 7 minutes and mixing speed of 100rpm, optimal removal of turbidity and colour was obtained. The result obtained was 40 TCU when water melon seeds where used. But the result obtained of 40TCU was above the recommended 5TCU from the world health organization. When 25% of aluminium Sulphate was used in combination with 75% watermelon seeds, the best recommended turbidity was obtained. Also, the recommended pH was obtained at this point. The turbidity obtained was 1.0TCU and the pH obtained was 6.8 which are within the recommended values by WHO. The economic analysis showed considering a treatment process of 25m3/day of water showed a payback period of 9 months and a return on investment of $377506/year. These results obtained showed that water melon seeds can be used as a natural coagulant in water treatment when used in a 75% water melon seeds in combination with 25% Aluminium Sulphate.en_US
