Alcohol abuse among the youth is a serious problem in Uganda. It is even higher among youth in densely populated areas such as the slums in Kampala city and other urban areas. The numerous problems which are faced by the slums youth as a result of alcohol abuse and particularly how they are being solved are not well understood. This study examined how the problems associated with alcohol abuse among the youth in Katanga slum, Kampala City are being solved. In particular, the study addressed the following specific objectives: 1) To assess how the youth conceptualize the problem of alcohol abuse in the Katanga slum, Kampala city; 2) to examine the consequences of alcohol abuse among the youth in Katanga slum, Kampala city; and 3) to find out the ways in which the youth solve alcohol abuse in Katanga slum, Kampala city. The study applied a case study design and a qualitative approach. Data were collected using in-depth interviews with the youth who are involved in alcohol abuse in Katanga slums and key informants who were residents of Katanga slum. The participants were selected using purposive sampling techniques. The qualitative data was analyzed using the method of thematic analysis. The findings show that the youth understand the concept of alcohol abuse to mean excessive consumption, for a prolonged period and to the extent that it led to loss of their senses. The consequences of alcohol abuse were reported to include being at risk of acquiring sexually transmitted diseases and mental problems. The ways in which the problem of alcohol abuse was being solved include avoiding friends who drank and the drinking places. Based on these findings, I recommend that the youth are supported by government and development partners with psychosocial support e.g., counselling and sensitization on alcohol abuse among others.en_US
