dc.description.abstractThe study aimed at finding out the nature and causes of child labor in Katanga slum in Kawempe division, Kampala city. The research employed a cross-sectional research design in which face to face interviews were conducted with a standardize structured questionnaire to obtain data from the primary respondents, unstructured interviews were also done to understand the different feelings that surrounds the child labor in Katanga area, key informant interviews and focus group discussions were employed as well to supplement the findings. The study sample comprised of 60 primary respondents which were selected using purposive sampling technique. The study was guided by the following objectives; to find out the nature/forms of child labor, to find out the causes of child labor, to understand parent’s perceptions towards child labor and finally to find out the challenges faced by children who work for pay. The research employed both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The data collection methods involved face to face interviews in which a standardize structured questionnaire was employed to obtain data from the primary respondents, unstructured interviews were also done to understand the different feelings that surrounds the child labor in Katanga area, key informant interviews and focus group discussions were employed as well to supplement the findings. The study sample comprised of 60 primary respondents which were selected using purposive sampling technique. The study findings revealed that parents perceived economic problems, family matters, lack of education as well as ignorance of parent are the main reasons for parents to engage children into work for pay. Additionally, parent’s approval, unemployment of parents, and age of parents as well as family are some of the perceived cause of child labor. Finally, the study highlights ill health, stunted growth, and malnutrition are some of the effects of child labor.en_US
