A research report submitted to the Department of Chemistry in partial fulfillment for award of Bachelors Degree in Industrial Chemistry of Makerere University.en_US
This research is an assessment of effectiveness of the various flocculants used for sugarcane juice clarification with a case study of Kakira Sugar Limited. This chapter presents the back ground of the study that includes background information to the study, problem statement, objectives of the study, Scope of the study and Significance of the study. The use of high molecular weight synthetic polymers as flocculants to enhance solid or liquid separations is now a common practice in many chemical process industries. In Kakira Sugar Limited, their importance is such that all factories are now dependent on the continuous controlled addition of low doses of carefully selected polymers. The progress made in the recent years in the commercial production of high molecular weight polymers has resulted in substantial savings in operation and capital costs, as well as reduction in sucrose losses during processing.en_US
