dc.description.abstractResearch in recent years has focused on the optimization of building materials by using local contents i.e., the use of indigenous materials; and local industrial by-products unique and abundant in certain localities. This study therefore explored ways in which lateritic soil could be utilised in hollow concrete block production. Concrete blocks were made with lateritic soil replacing the conventional fine aggregate (local river sand) in steps of 20 to 80 percent. Mechanical properties of the blocks were then tested to evaluate their performance in terms of compressive strength and water absorption so as to determine the acceptable percentage replacement. Soil tests were performed on the lateritic soil samples to characterise the soils. Decrease in strength and mass of the blocks with increasing sand replacement with lateritic soil was observed.en_US
