dc.description.abstract | Housing is one of those basic social conditions that determine the quality of life and welfare of people and places. Where homes are located, how well designed and built, and how well they are weaved into the environmental, social, cultural and economic fabric of communities are factors that, in a very real way, influence the daily lives of people, their health, security and wellbeing,
and which, given the long life of dwellings as physical structures, affect both the present and future generations. Housing is therefore central to sustainable development.
Housing is also part of the relationships between society and the environment. On the one hand, housing construction and operation consume large amounts of natural resources (land, energy, water, and building materials), while producing waste, air and water pollution. On the other hand, housing itself is exposed to a variety of environmental impacts and hazards. This study is concerned with the housing problems in urban slum area, particularly Kalimali Cell in Bwaise Neighborhood. The study found that the ever-increasing housing deficit, rapid urbanization, rural- urban migration, poverty in Kampala has promoted the mushrooming of
slums with the associated housing problems. The housing policies are partly to blame for the housing problems in Kampala city they have tended to be inconsistent, contradictory and discriminative in terms implementation. The study found that there is a serious housing problem in Kalimala Cell caused by congestionand overcrowding, in terms of plot coverage and population density. This was found to be aggravated by rapid rural-urban migration. | en_US |
