Microstrip patch antennas have found various applications in several wireless communication systems today. However, there are several drawbacks to their use such as low bandwidth and gain that limits their use for millimetre wave applications. Many researchers have proposed various antenna designs with the aim of enhancing the gain and bandwidth of the antennas such as stacked patch antennas, multiple layer substrate technique and so on. Antenna arrays have also been explored as a further step in this direction. This thesis proposes the design of a a dual band planar antenna array for millimetre wave applications. The main objective of this thesis is to improve the gain of microstrip patch antenna in regards with X-band applications through the use of arrays while assuring the desired radiation pattern, directivity, return loss and efficiency. The proposed antenna is a dual band antenna operating at 7.88 GHz and 14.65 GHz with gains of 11.11 dB and 10.4 dB respectively which are superior in comparison with the gains of the antennas from the literature reviewed. The antenna can be used for X and Ku band applications.en_US
