|dc.description.abstract||In Uganda, there are various forms of Land ownership or tenure systems that exist across the country. These include Freehold system, Leasehold system, Mailo and the customary tenure system. All these systems exist simultaneously in all regions of the country but are predominant in particular areas of the country for example; the mailo system in central Uganda, freehold predominant in the West, customary in the North and East.
Specifically focusing on the leasehold tenure system, that is the second prevalent system of ownership in central Uganda, particularly Kampala district. The leasehold system has been in existence for many years in Uganda and on it has many users or developers. This research focuses on how this system has supported developments; that is, infrastructural developments in Kampala.
Infrastructure is an important aspect of development in a country, more especially its capital. There are different forms of infrastructure including but not limited to; roads, commercial buildings, residential buildings, industries, fuel stations, just to name a few. Infrastructural development is vital in the growth of an economy, improvement in standard of life of people and it should be encouraged or promoted by the necessary authorities. How can this be done? Providing subsidies for developers encouraging investment in infrastructure, improving available conditions of investment like easy to access finance, and affordable labor to name a few. However one of the most important necessities for infrastructure to be set up, whether public or private is; land.
Land is an important factor of production or development, but for quality infrastructure to be set up, the tenure system also matters. With the various available forms of land ownership, it has been established that the most suitable for infrastructural development is the leasehold system. This is because it for one has the least wrangles and disputes, it has specific rules and regulations that govern it as well. But a few questions arise on how it has actually favored or encouraged infrastructural development in the city. This shall be established hereunder.||en_US
