The research uses both quantitative and qualitative date. It is based mainly on these elements: literature review, casual interviews, a survey and analysis of information sources. The survey was carried out on large building construction sites in Kampala City which were randomly sampled. The main primary data collection tool was a serf-administered questionnaire. The findings reveal that the major activities are scheduling; placing orders; receiving and delivery; inspection; storage and dispatch; inventory control. The traditional methods of management of materials on the sites, albeit fairly effective, were found to be manual and employ a paper-based approach. The process is mainly labor based and engagers various personnel such as the Project Manager, Site Engineer, Stores Manager among others. The research also establishes the various challenges faced in materials management such as material theft, poor material rotation, delays and orders on short notice. There is a need for more sophisticated materials management solutions with accord to the needs of large construction schemes as proposed by this document.
