This study aims to assess the factors that determine female students' uptake of the loan scheme at Makerere University. The study employed a two-stage cluster sampling technique which involved selecting a simple random sample from each cluster without replacement. A sample of 153 Makerere university students from the School of Statistics and Planning was selected and primary data was collected using questionnaires through google forms that were sent to the students online. The analysis was done at three levels; - univariate analysis, bivariate analysis, and multivariate analysis using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 25. All tests were done at a 5% significance level and 95% level of confidence. The findings of the study indicated that attitude toward debt was the significant determinant of the female student’s uptake of the Loan scheme. The results indicated that female student is 1.514 times more likely to take up the loan scheme to finance their university education. The study recommended that Student and public sensitization of the objectives of the Loan scheme in Uganda to achieve a complete mindset makeover or a complete positive shift in attitude towards the loan scheme be done It also recommended that HESFB should carry out career guidance for all the prospective candidates for the loan scheme at their earlier education levels to prepare them for the courses and institutions approved by the HESFB The study suggested further research to be carried out to assess how the Loan scheme can be used to attain regional balance in education in Uganda, also, this study was limited in scope and depth thus future studies should provide a broader perspective to include students from different higher education institutions all over the country.en_US
