Analysis of the factors that determine sexual gender based violence in Uganda (Evidence from the Demographic Healthy Survey 2016)

Abstract

This study analyzed the factors that determine sexual gender based violence among respondents aged 15-49 in Uganda basing on data from the 2016 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey (UDHS). The study analyzed 2479 weighted cases of respondents in STATA version 15. Chi-square tests and binary logistic regression was used to examine the factors associated with sexual violence. At univariate level frequencies and percentages were considered and at bivariate chi-square results showed that region of the respondents, , place of residence and highest level of education were significantly associated with sexual violence at p<0.05 while age, marital status and gender were insignificantly related to sexual violence among respondents. At further analysis using binary logistic regression, age and education level were significantly associated with sexual violence where a unit increase in age of the respondents decreased odds of getting sexually violated, respondents that had not attained formal education were more likely to chances of sexual violence whereas region of respondent, place of residence, gender and marital status were insignificantly related to sexual violence with p-values as 0.097, 0.866, 0.974 and 0.078 respectively The study recommends the need for Government and policy makers human rights commission to take on sensitization programs to curve down cases of gender based violence in the country. More so, there is need for more strict laws on sexual violence in order to combat increasing cases of sexual violence in the country.
