Effect of foundry practices on cast parts in Uganda case study: john Lugendo Foundry Company.

Foundry Practices are procedures followed in foundry companies to obtain castings from the time of having drawings of the required part to the time of machining to the desired size. Cast parts are made from different metals. These can be ferrous or non-ferrous metals. The primary raw materials are basically scrap in Uganda. Due to some errors in the foundry practices in terms of failure to separate scrap composition depending on a certain metal, poor temperature measurements, improper moisture determination and poorly set machining processes among others cause casting defects which reduce mass production affecting the company and the manufacturing sector at large. In John Lugendo Foundry Company they use majorly sand casting with its associated problems of porosity, mismatch, blowhole, inclusion, short pour among others which defects have to be corrected in order to improve the casting production in Uganda. This report covers various chapters. The first chapter covers the introduction to the casting technology for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals, the problem statement, the main and specific objectives of the project, the justification, and the scope of the project. The second chapter gives a detailed explanation of the literature review on the casting theory and states gaps in regard to as far as casting is concerned in Uganda. The chapter also states the necessary calculations that are supposed to be employed in regard to having a properly cast part. It also gives the types of casting, heating procedures, types of furnaces used in melting scrap. Chapter three entails the methods employed to achieve the specific objectives and Chapter four is on results and discussion on what has been found. Foundry practices that should be opted for in Uganda particularly in John Lugendo foundry Company have been simplified in chapters four and five. This is to consolidate the proper understanding of someone who clearly reads and learns about them. The casting procedures opted for are mainly expected to improve the production sector in Uganda.
