Detection of solar flares using sid monitor data
Abstract
Monitoring and recording physical conditions of the sun is a great scientific activity that can be used to model for for the raising technological systems mostly in the communication sector. Since the ionosphere plays a key role in the radio communication theory,it can be used to study the space weather through the use of electronic devices that have the ability detecting the very small variations in the ionosphere termed as the SID monitor, which are lo- cated in various stations world over.
The data acquisition is ground based through the use of highly sensitive antennas with capacity to detect the VLF radio signals bounced from the ionosphere through a data logger that connects to a computer for storage and analysis. Graphs like seismographs and scrolled through to check for any potential flares from the spike. During a given solar activity, flares can be released along with some other fea- tures like auroras, CMEs, geomagnetic storms and many other phenomena[1] The existence of the above phenomena can be confirmed from the link to the GOES that traps information immediately from the space for accuracy.
