Determinants of sexually transmitted diseases among sexually active women in Uganda

Abstract

This research study aims at examining the determinants of sexually transmitted diseases among sexually active women in Uganda. Hence a study analyzed knowledge about sexually transmitted diseases among sexually active women in Uganda using data from Uganda demographic and health survey (UDHS 2006/2001, UBOS & ICFINC 2011). The study analyzed data from 7724 sexually active women of reproductive ages who reported whether they had sexually transmitted diseases during the 12months period preceding the survey. The main variables of the interest were age of the woman, education level, marital status, residence and region of the respondents. The findings revealed that majority of respondents were from rural areas which were mainly from western and central regions of Uganda and more than half of the respondents had only attained primary level of education. The recommendations made were as follows: The study demonstrated that there is significant relationship between age, marital status and region as determinants of sexually transmitted diseases. This partly reflects the importance of determinants of sexually transmitted diseases in the struggle to control STD‟S. This deserves further attention. For instance, it would be of particular interest to extend the analysis to include variables which indicate control of the determinants of STD‟S.
