| dc.description.abstract | While sexual harrasment has been researched on, however we don't seem to understand how people perceive sexual harassment and their attitude towards it. Based on these gaps, I investigated community member’s perceptions and attitudes towards sexual harassment in Bulange sub-county, Namutumba district. The study focus was mainly on the various forms of sexual harassment, community perception and attitudes towards sexual harassment in Bulange sub-county, Namutumba district. To effectively investigate the above issues, I employed a descriptive survey design involving quantitative and qualitative methods and approaches. I collected data using a structured questionnaire from 94 randomly selected community members. In addition, 10 key informants were interviewed. Quantitative data was analyzed using manual tallies and presented using frequency distribution tables. On the hand, qualitative data was analyzed using thematic analysis.
Forty six (46%) of the respondents perceive sexual harassment to include; physical, verbal. In addition, use of one’s position of power was mentioned as a form of sexual harassment. Further, 52% of the respondents perceived that sexual harassment was violence against women indicating that their perception towards sexual harassment was the use of physical force to abuse women. Furthermore, 55% of respondent’s attitude on sexual harassment was intolerant not as they themselves actively stopped the unwanted sexual attention.
Overall, results point to community member’s perception towards sexual harassment being well manifested through consciousness of the forms of sexual harassment, more alertness on the vice of sexual harassment, its causes and increased realization of the measures of sexual harassment among others.
I recommend that the government through the ministry of gender, labor and social development should put in place clear laws on sexual harassment and ensure that local leaders of different areas sensitize, implement and monitor the effectiveness of these laws in their respective communities to ensure that the rights of all people are protected. | en_US |
