Information and communication technology (ICT) offers numerous benefits to the education sector globally. However, the usage of ICT to implement teaching and learning in African higher institutions is low despite the numerous benefits which include long distance learning, learner centered learning, preparation and presentation of content, motivation of students and access to digital information. The purpose of this study is to review literature on the usage of ICT in African higher institutions of learning most especially the extent to which ICT is implemented in teaching and learning, benefits of ICT usage and challenges facing its usage and possible remedies that can be put in place to handle the challenges. The information was acquired through reviewing and comparing literature of already existing information. The extent was looked at globally where there is higher ICT usage in higher institutions in developed countries than developing countries. In Africa as a continent, ICT usage in education is still low and this is due to various challenges which were categorized into technical, economic and socioeconomic. Possible remedies to the above challenges include improving accessibility to ICT tools, training lecturers and providing financial support to these institutions.en_US
