Design and Construction of An obstacle Detector system for the Visually impaired people using Arduino uno Board
Abstract
Visually impaired individuals are individuals who need a lot of care especially when they want to move from one place to another of their choice, some of them end up getting lost on the way, knocking obstacles especially when they are trying to find their destination by themselves. The purpose of this research paper is to build an effective obstacle detector system, which is capable of detecting obstacles about 400 cm or 2 –3 feet from the user making him/her to move freely without much external assistance. The system will first be weighed and then attached on an already made white cane. Using the Arduino Software and Hardware, the microchip AT mega 238on the Arduino board was programmed in order to allow some electronic components to operate effectively like producing sound through a buzzer and vibration from a cellphone vibrator to guide the user in safe moving.
The system was later tested in the Laboratory and found out that the system was consistent with the Laboratory expectations making it effective to use. However, I recommend to the future developers of this system to attach more sensors such as water sensors, Fire sensors or radiation sensors as I was advised by a visually – impaired colleague when I was trying it out with her.
