Poor performance of students in schools in various institutions has been largely attributed to their inability to effectively retrieve information for academic work. The volumes of information that are created, generated and stored are so immense that without adequate knowledge of information retrieval guidelines, the process of retrieving information would be frustrating. The purpose of this study was to come up with guidelines for information retrieval for library users at MultiTech Business School that can be applied to ease information retrieval to guide the users in utilizing and accessing library materials and improve resource utilization. The aim of the project was;
To establish the information needs of the users of Multitech Business School, to determine Services offered by the library at MultiTech Business School, to examine the current information storage and retrieval systems at MultiTech Business School, to determine the challenges faced with the current information retrieval systems at MultiTech Business School, to design information retrieval guidelines for MultiTech Business School library.
Qualitative data collection methods were used to gather useful information related to the study topic. This was done using structured interviews, questionnaires that were issued to a sample size of 100 respondents consisting of students, library staff and other users.
The findings reveal that students are aware of the existence of information retrieval systems in the school and interface with them. However, there was there was seemingly use of weak information retrieval guidelines which limits easy and quick access to and retrieval of information. This is accompanied with the underutilization of library resources and services due to inadequate sensitization, Unawareness by the library users about the existence and methodology of access to desired.
The study recommends the adoption of the developed information retrieval guidelines to facilitate resource utilization, to protect the integrity of the data and information as well as to make the desired information available to the users and to make information retrieval easy and quick.
