The study of occupational health, safety and environment management in manufacturing sector in Uganda (Case study: Nice House of Plastics Limited)

Abstract

Nice House of Plastics Limited is a plastic products manufacturing company. It’s located at Plot 75, Mulwana Road, Bugolobi, Kampala, Uganda. It’s one of companies under Mulwana group of companies. Nice House of Plastics Limited was founded in 1970 by Dr. James Mulwana, a leading entrepreneur and industrialist in Uganda who later died in January 2013. The company produces a wide range of household and industrial plastics from agricultural, furniture, packaging tableware, and toothbrushes to washing and writing instruments. The Company employs more than 300 employees. The study of OSHE was conducted at this Company. Data from the company was collected which included hazards and their respective risks, mitigation measures employed by the company to mitigate hazards and company statistics in relation to OHSE. The data collection methods included observations, checklists and questionnaires and desk research. The data collected was analyzed qualitatively using risk assessment and quantitatively. The results were discussed and then the ways for improvement on HSE compliance were suggested. In conclusion, the company was trying hard to comply to OSHE requirements though there were a lot of gaps that were discovered which needed to be addressed.
