The contribution of small scale business towards poverty reduction in Gulu Municipality: A Case Study of Pece Division

Abstract

The study examined the contribution of small scale businesses towards poverty reduction in gulu municipality a case of Pece division. The study was guided by the following objectives; to find out the major indicators of absolute poverty, to find out the level of small scale business development and composition, to find out how small scale business have contributed in reducing the rate of these indicators. The study was entirely descriptive and analytical with a sample size of 60 respondents selected using a simple random sample where each business, household or civil servant taken as a single respondent. The study used primary data got from the field as well as periodic reports of the local government at division level to supplement the precision of the report. Data was collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed us SPSS. The major findings were that small scale businesses contribute significantly to poverty reduction and that small scale business owners can generally afford their basic needs of life. Small scale businesses however are faced with different challenges and thus the study recommends subsidizing consumers in order to boost sales, providing avenue for credit accessibility for business proprietors, ensuring price stability and improving social services like roads in the order to improve the business sector
