| dc.description.abstract | The place women choose to deliver is considered an important factor which has the potential to affect the health and well-being of the mother and the newborn baby. The main aim of the study was to establish an association between demographic factors, social-economic factors and healthcare factors in relation to place of delivery for women(15-49years) in Ankole region in western Uganda. There is not sufficient research surrounding the elements that influence birth place choice in Ankole region. Examining choice of place of delivery is a basic need in Uganda so that policy makers are able to make policies and interventions that aim at addressing the maternal and child health issues. The main objective of the study was to find out the factors that determine the mothers’ choice of place of delivery for the current birth in Ankole region. Methods: The research describes the data from the Uganda Demographic and Health 2016 by UBOS which is a national representative survey. A total of 1301 women were interviewed from which 661women between (15-19) years where obtained. Data was analyzed using Stata 14SE(64- bits) into frequency tables using actual tallies and percentages and association between the dependent and independent variables was tested using p-value. Ethical approval was sought from the Demographic health survey program before conducting the study. Results The study identified demographic, socio-economic and Healthcare factors, wealth index, religion, Age of the mother, Education level, and ANC visits as determining factors for a mothers’ choice of place of delivery. Results showed that the biggest proportion of the respondents were Catholics (40.30%) and the minority being Muslims (7.25%). The mothers’ choice of place of birth in an improved health facility for the women that had primary and secondary education was (60.98% and 20.90%) respectively. All the dependent variables were statistically significantly related to the choice of place of delivery, giving values less than 0.05(p<0.05). Conclusion: The choice of place to deliver from in Ankole region is attributable to multiple factors, the study was categorized into; demographic factors, socio-economic factors and healthcare factors mediated by knowledge and attitude of the mother accessibility and affordability of maternal health services should be a priority in the annual national budgets as this will enable the population in the rural setting to have equal access and afford health services to cub problems associated with maternal health like maternal and infant mortality. The Ugandan government should also introduce wealth creation programs to reduce on the poverty levels in Ankole region. | en_US |
