Development of a prototype remote monitoring system for water treatment systems on landing sites.
Abstract
Remote monitoring of water treatment systems in off grid locations like landing sites can improve
the efficiency and performance of these systems. This aids in early detection of system defects
hence ensuring the consistent supply of safe drinking water. This project looks at developing a
prototype remote monitoring system for landing sites. To develop this system, the system
requirements were determined and the computer program was developed using Python
programming language and IoT as the main communication mechanism.
The performance of the prototype system met set requirements after being tested using UI testing
and Functional Testing methods for software. The key finding of this project was that the
assembled prototype can effectively monitor water quality parameters remotely in the water
treatment process. This project concludes that it is recommended to use Arduino boards in
comparison to the Raspberry Pi microcomputer in such systems in addition to industrial scale
‘water-proof’ sensors which offer increased durability.
