Factors influencing students' choice of transport at Makerere University: a case study of School of Statistics and Planning
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate to investigate the factors influencing students’ choice of transport at Makerere University . Both resident and nonresident students were the sampled respondents during the study. All the relevant information obtained through the selected methods were organized in tables for easy interpretation. A questionnaire was the instrument used for data collected from 85 participants from school of statistics and planning. The following were the major findings: Sports bicycles, motorcycles, taxis and special cars are some of the common means of transport used by commuter students from the school of statistics and planning.
Makerere University. Safety and security, students’ life styles, distance, and university schedule students are some of the major social factors which influence students’ choice of transport means at Makerere. Transport cost, availability of transport, quality of services, travel time and parents’ income are some of the major economic factors influencing students’ choice of transport means to the university. The researcher therefore, recommends that university management should work in collaboration with people in charge public transport in order to ensure their efficiency in supporting the students in the course of their studies.
