Irony in selected Luganda Wakayima fables.
Abstract
The study is aimed at looking at irony in selected wakayima fables. With the help of primary and secondary sources, the study generates about eight fables in the Luganda language. Interviews, observation and focus group study were conducted which helped in the collection of the data. This data has been translated in English language and a close analysis of the characters, what they say and what is said about them helps in bringing out irony. It is also guided by the pretense theory of irony which helps us in bringing out irony. The eight selected Wakayima tales are ironic with different thematic concerns in them and helps explain how different characters in fables bring about irony. Lessons are drawn from them to help in teaching morals to society thus leading to the continuity and preservation of morals in society. The study goes ahead to look out for what different scholars
say about fables and irony and their similarities and differences.
