Assessment of reactive power compensation using distributed generation. Case study: Kibuku town council.
Abstract
Voltages in power networks must be consistent and fall within a predetermined range. The
provision of reactive power (reactive power compensation) is one method of controlling these
voltages. This study proved the usage of distributed generation systems (DGs) for reactive power
compensation. This is accomplished using a case study of the Kibuku Town Council, which was
chosen due to its subpar voltage profiles. The DGs were modeled to improve the area's voltage
profiles and evaluated against the widely used conventional approaches. The results obtained
demonstrate the potential of DGs for this purpose.
